Question #3
Do I have a compelling vision and mission?
Have you ever woken up feeling sick, tired or simply not in the mood to do anything?
Cold, dark and wet winter mornings are particularly tough for me! (I live in London!)
Unfortunately motivation alone is not enough!
Having a compelling vision and mission is key to awakening the strength of character to keep moving forward, even on the days when you might be operating at less than 100%.
The biggest thing that keeps me going, is maintaining a laser focus on my mission and on the people I am called to help. When I visualise myself empowering people, creating a better life for my family and making an impact – I get a burst of energy – even on the days when I’m not feeling at my best!
And when you hear the stories of some of the most noteworthy people in history e.g. Mother Teressa, Oprah or Nelson Mandela, the common thread in their missions is that they were using their gifts to serve others.
It was bigger than one person and that’s why they stayed resilient even when things got really tough.
We all get excited by the idea of being successful, but operating from a place of mission and purpose, will give you extra fuel in the tank – even on those cold winter mornings when all you want to do is go back to bed!
It is also important to implement daily routines that support you to stay on track with your mission. My daily routine is a simple framework that includes prayer, meditation, movement and identifying my most important priority each day so I can direct my energy, creativity and focus accordingly.
As per the famous quote by Aristotle – “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence is therefore not an act, but a habit”
Score yourself from 1 to 5, with 1 being “very compelling vision and mission” and 5 being “no idea what my mission and purpose is”: Do I have a compelling vision and mission?
So how did you do with the 3 questions?
Add up your scores to discover the strength of your resilience muscle!
- If you scored less than 5, then… GREAT WORK! Keep lifting those weights!
- If you scored between 5-10, then… GOOD EFFORT! But you can do even better!
- If you scored between 10-15, then… WE’VE GOT WORK TO DO! See you at the gym!
Like any other attribute or skill, resilience is something that we need to continue to work on in order to learn and grow.
Without doing the work, it is impossible to have a strong resilience muscle. Just like it’s not possible to have strong physical muscles without exercising on a regular basis.
As Tony Robbins says – “If we don’t consciously plant the seeds of what we want in the garden of our minds, we’ll end up with weeds.”
